Broadway musical ‘KPOP’ closes after two months, despite success and impressive cast.

Posted on October 28, 2023 By mK89339E No Comments on Broadway musical ‘KPOP’ closes after two months, despite success and impressive cast.

KPOP Is Closing After Two Months on Broadway

KPOP, a new Broadway musical about the K-pop phenomenon, is closing after two months on the Great White Way. The producers of the show say it was a victim of its own success.

The show stars Luna of the real-life K-pop group f(x) and was conceived by Jason Kim, with a book by him and Woodshed Collective. Its music is by Helen Park and Max Vernon.

Luna

After an Off-Broadway run at Ars Nova, the acclaimed musical about K-pop is tackling Broadway. The cast, led by Luna, the former f(x) member, boast impressive harmonies and dazzling dance moves.

The show’s Broadway incarnation has been reworked by original book writer Jason Kim and director Teddy Bergman to focus on the label run by a domineering diva named Ruby. It also features Dear Evan Hansen star Zachary Noah Piser, Julia Abueva, BoHyung, Amy Keum and Marina Kondo.

Min

You don’t need to be a K-Pop fanatic or understand Korean to enjoy KPOP. Any Korean dialogue uses enough English loanwords to make it understandable, and the musical’s characters often shout their passionate arguments in the same way real K-Pop stars do.

Despite its success Off-Broadway, KPOP had trouble getting established on Broadway. Several of its previews were canceled due to Covid-19 illnesses, and the show struggled financially.

BoHyung

Luna (f(x)) makes her Broadway debut alongside musical theater veterans Min and Kevin Woo (U-KISS). The show follows the fictional K-pop artists of RBY Entertainment as they prepare for their New York City debut.

It explores the relentless discipline, raw talent, and commercial ambition behind the global phenomenon. It has already racked up 44 previews and 17 regular performances.

Julia Abueva

Julia Abueva made her NY stage debut originating the role of Sonoma in Ars Nova’s KPOP and is thrilled to be back for this Broadway iteration. She is a Manila-born musical prodigy, having performed as a guest artist for Cat Ong concerts at age 8, and having been the voice of the APEC concert in 2009.

She hopes that the show will push beyond Broadway’s pearl-clutching gatekeeping.

Major Curda

Major Curda is an American actor best known for his role as Dilton Doiley on The CW’s Riverdale. He has also guest starred on numerous television shows, including Melissa & Joey, The Thundermans, Private Practice, and Children’s Hospital.

He was born on July 12, 1999 in Florida and holds American nationality. He belongs to a mixed ethnic background as his father is of Korean descent and his mother is half Scottish and half English.

Jinwoo Jung

The acclaimed musical, which was co-authored by Jason Kim and features 19 Broadway debuts, centers on the fictional South Korean music label RBY Entertainment. MwE, played by Luna (f(x) member), tries to break into the American market while trying to maintain her public image.

The story splices emo meditations with house-inflected bangers and rap arias, all with audience-courting intensity. But it never gets too deep.

Jiho Kang

It’s been a decade since Psy skipped and hopped his way into the limelight with “Gangnam Style.” Now, K-pop, led by pristine, pitch-perfect idols like Blackpink and BTS, has crashed into Broadway at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

And despite fervent last-ditch efforts to keep the show alive, it’s already closing. But cast and crew members say they’re not giving up on their vision.

Amy Keum

KPOP encapsulates modern music with emo meditations, house-inflected bangers, and rap arias that transition into dance music and reggaeton. But it avoids inspecting the vicissitudes of its characters with any depth.

The show boasts impressive vocal talent from a cast that makes its Broadway debut. And the music, by Helen Park and Max Vernon, dabbles in a range of styles that evoke artists like RTMIS, F8, and MwE.

James Kho

KPOP evokes a range of modern music—emo meditations, house-inflected bangers, rap arias. And yet it eschews the cynical tactics that have catapulted real-life pop stars to fervent fandom.

The cast includes Broadway-caliber voices like Luna, Julia Abueva, Zachary Noah Piser, Marina Kondo, and others making their Broadway debuts. The show closes on December 11 at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

Marina Kondo

Marina is a NYC-based musical theater and TV actress. Her credits include the national tour of Frozen and Lincoln Center’s The King and I. She currently stars in the Hulu series Succession.

Rather than appease Broadway gatekeepers, KPOP aims to capture the spirit of the genre and culture as it is now. And it succeeds, thanks to Helen Park and Max Vernon’s music and the cast’s flawless vocals.

Broadway Actors’ Pay Structure and Salaries Revealed

Posted on October 26, 2023 By mK89339E No Comments on Broadway Actors’ Pay Structure and Salaries Revealed

How Much Are Broadway Actors Paid?

Broadway actors are paid according to an established scale negotiated by their union, Actors’ Equity. Their base salary is determined by the standard union contracts, which are published several years in advance.

Exceptional actors invest years in honing their craft and gaining valuable experience. Their dedication and expertise make them invaluable to the success of any Broadway production.

Lead and Supporting Actors

A good Broadway actor is a vital component of any show’s success. They often invest years of study, rigorous training and extensive performance experience to perfect their craft and bring the characters they portray to life on stage. For this reason, they are highly sought after by producers.

Actors who secure lead roles in Broadway productions are typically paid a higher salary than those in supporting roles. However, the pay scale varies depending on the name recognition of the performer and the importance of the role.

The minimum weekly salary for a professional actor in any Equity production is $2,034. That figure increases if the performer is asked to move set pieces, serve as a dance captain or has a specialty track in ensemble or chorus. In addition, performers can receive a $20 weekly increase for extraordinary risk and contract increment payments. These figures are based on the standard union contracts.

Ensemble Actors

In general, actors on Broadway that are part of Actors’ Equity earn a minimum salary of $2,034 per week. There are smaller salary bumps for performers who do specialty numbers or chorus roles. There’s a bigger bump for understudy assignments and dance captain duties. And if the show has to pay a dancer or actor for moving pieces of set, or for any extraordinary risk payments, that adds up too.

These figures are the base minimum allowed by current contracts. But established celebrities who join a show can negotiate significantly more—called overscale.

Similarly, a show that is an original Broadway production may offer profit-sharing arrangements to its cast members. That’s especially common when the show becomes a megahit. The actors who first joined the cast of Hamilton, for example, have seen their salaries grow to astronomical amounts. That’s because the original cast members helped shape the show’s success and popularity. They took a big risk and deserve a significant paycheck for their efforts.

Stage Managers

Stage managers are a vital part of any theatrical production. They handle everything from constructing and destroying sets to managing props, and their work is integral to the success of any show. They are responsible for ensuring that the performance runs smoothly from start to finish.

Many stage managers begin their careers as interns at theatre companies or at places like the Williamstown Theater Festival. This type of internship is an excellent way to gain experience and network with other professionals in the field. Many stage managers also find their jobs through recommendations from other professionals.

Salaries for professional Broadway actors, stage managers and musicians are calculated on a weekly basis since landing a role doesn’t guarantee them a year-round gig. The number of shows a production plays each week will also have an impact on the pay scale. The size of the company or venue can also affect salaries, as can the level of experience.

Director

The illustrious world of Broadway actors showcases a remarkable career path for those who possess the requisite talent and passion. By creating memorable theatrical experiences for audiences, Broadway performers are able to touch and transform lives. However, the financial prospects of a career on these storied stages can often be intimidating for those interested in pursuing this prestigious profession.

The primary duties of a Broadway actor are to perform in a musical or play, working closely with directors, music conductors, costume designers, makeup artists, and hair stylists. They also rehearse daily and are responsible for conveying their character’s story in an authentic manner.

Currently, an actor in a League-produced show earns a base salary of $1703 per week under Actors Equity contracts. However, established Broadway stars can earn upwards of $100,000 a week depending on the popularity of their productions and the size of their roles.

Working on Broadway: The Challenges and Rewards

Posted on October 24, 2023 By mK89339E No Comments on Working on Broadway: The Challenges and Rewards

Working on Broadway

The theater district in New York City is home to many of the world’s most famous stage plays and musicals. Working on Broadway can be a challenging, rewarding and lucrative career. The audition process can be long and competitive.

If you want to work on Broadway, your best bet is to get a talent agent. Some agents specialize in casting Broadway shows.

Casting

There are 42 theaters on Broadway, and each one needs performers to fill various roles. The show’s director and other members of the creative team choose which actors to bring to the stage. The choice is not always easy. The casting process can be long and competitive, especially for lead roles. It can also be frustrating because many people want to be in the show, and not everyone is a fit.

Actors must be members of Actors’ Equity Association to audition for Broadway shows. At a typical audition, an Equity monitor arrives an hour before the posted start time and signs in performers based on their union status. Full Equity members have priority, followed by Equity candidates. If there are still slots available, nonunion performers may be allowed in to audition.

Some Broadway shows have specific audition requirements, such as having a college degree in acting or musical theatre. It is also important to have professional training and experience, particularly in a musical or dance.

Auditioning

It is a competitive industry and only a small percentage of performers who audition for a Broadway role actually get cast. You can increase your odds of getting cast by studying and training, networking, attending open calls and being persistent. The most successful actors take it seriously and do everything they can to land a coveted job on Broadway.

Many Broadway actors are members of Actors’ Equity Association, which is the union for stage performers. Those actors have a priority at auditions. Auditioning for a Broadway show without an agent is difficult, and you may be turned away for being late or “typed-out,” which means that large groups of people are kept away from the audition room based on their appearance or body type.

To be a Broadway actor, you must have significant professional acting experience and training, as well as strong singing and dancing skills. You must also be willing to work long hours and travel for rehearsals and performances. You will also have to learn from your fellow actors and be a team player.

Pay

Working on Broadway is serious business – and hard work. The show may run for years, but it can also close within a week, leaving performers out of work. And the pay isn’t exactly a fortune, despite what you might think from watching Lin-Manuel Miranda command millions for his role in Hamilton.

In general, actors who perform in unionized shows (which require membership in Actors’ Equity Association) earn a minimum of $1,750 per week. That amount can be adjusted based on the size of the theater and its capacity. There are additional bumps for special cases, such as moving set pieces or understudying the lead, and even more for performing certain roles that put the actor at physical risk.

Named stars are also allowed to negotiate a higher weekly salary. This is called “overscale.” A one-year rider in which the performer promises to remain with a particular production for a year can bring in an extra $2,600 per week.

Requirements

The requirements for becoming a Broadway actor include talent, training and persistence. There are few vacancies for performers on the Broadway stage, so casting directors receive thousands of audition tapes and resumes each year. It’s difficult to get a leading role on Broadway, but an actor who is cast in a supporting role can make quite a bit of money.

Attend a top acting or musical theater school to learn your craft and develop a portfolio of headshots, a resume and performance experience. Become a member of Actor’s Equity Association (AEA) to ensure you can perform under union contracts. Members must have professional headshots, a resume and performance experiences to be eligible to audition for Broadway shows.

You can find upcoming Broadway auditions by visiting the official website of the American Theatre Wing. Depending on the show, you may also be required to attend an open call. A monitor runs each audition. He or she assigns performers to an audition time slot based on their union status and whether they are a full member or a candidate.

R-rated Broadway Musicals

Posted on October 23, 2023 By mK89339E No Comments on R-rated Broadway Musicals

R-Rated Broadway Musicals

A24 may be a household name now, but this scrappy studio took a bit of a gamble with its first film musical. Directed by “Borat” creator Larry Charles, Dicks stars Aaron Jackson and Josh Sharp as foul-mouthed identical twins who pull a Parent Trap-style switch to reunite their parents (Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally).

A wild comedy with songs and genitalia jokes, the movie was well received in initial reviews. Its wackiness has us wondering, what are other R-rated broadway musical movies?

Dicks: The Musical

Dicks: The Musical is a broad, campy, audacious riff on classics like The Parent Trap. It’s also a movie that proves you can do r-rated at the box office if you take a risk. Director Larry Charles (Borat, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and co-writers Josh Sharp and Aaron Jackson do their best to make the most of their brash premise, and they don’t disappoint.

This movie is definitely not for kids, and the first clue that this isn’t the Disney version of the idiom is the opening title card proclaiming that “Dicks: The Musical was brazenly written by two homosexuals.” The film stars Nathan Lane and Megan Mullally as callous businessmen who discover they are long-lost identical twins and plan to reunite their eccentric divorced parents.

The film’s humor may be unnecessarily offensive to some, but it’s hard not to have fun watching these performers go all-in. Whether the joke doesn’t land or is flat-out silly, there’s something about seeing people who are so confident in their stupidity that it’s utterly endearing.

Beetlejuice: The Musical

After a brief hiatus due to the Broadway shutdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, Beetlejuice returned to the Marquis Theatre in April 2022. Alex Brightman reprised his Tony-nominated performance as the titular demon, and the rest of the cast was largely the same as before.

This wildly inventive musical comedy has a darkly humorous tone that makes it perfect for the entire family. It’s full of bawdy jokes about everything from guacamole to herpes to Katharine Hepburn, and it’s also a bitingly satirical look at Broadway itself.

Beetlejuice was nominated for 13 Drama Desk Awards in 2019 and won seven, including Outstanding Set Design (by David Korins), Actor in a Leading Role (Brightman), Featured Actress in a Musical (Leslie Kritzer), and Costume Design (by Scott Brown and Eddie Perfect). It’s not as explicit as some of the other r-rated broadway musicals, but it’s definitely a raunchy show. For example, within the first three minutes of the show, Beetlejuice snorts a line of cocaine off his arm.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

The 1975 r-rated movie Rocky Horror Picture Show has an unforgettable cast of characters and a catchy soundtrack that have inspired many spin-offs and tributes. The film is a cult classic that has continued to pack theaters nearly 50 years after its debut.

The film is a satirical tribute to B movies, Hammer Horror films, and ’70s glam rock. It features an all-star lineup, including Tim Curry as the kinky transvestite Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon as virginal small town couple Brad and Janet, Meat Loaf as motorcycle riding rough trader Eddie, and Richard O’Brien as the hunchback butler Riff Raff.

The movie is rated R because of its explicit sexual content and adult themes. However, it has been embraced by fans who attend midnight screenings and celebrate the unique atmosphere and traditions associated with the movie. Attendees often dress in costumes and sing along to the catchy songs. This audience participation is what contributes to the enduring popularity of the movie.

Rent

The original Broadway production of Rent and Hair changed art, culture and minds. They should have the same power on television, but that won’t happen if they’re dragged through the wringer of watering down into two-cent firecrackers.

Jonathan Larson’s edgy, sexually explicit musical about the death of HIV/AIDS in New York City’s East Village is a r-rated musical with some strong language and drug use. It portrays eight bohemian New Yorkers struggling to eek out an existence in the face of poverty, AIDS and their own insecurities.

A few years after Rent’s Broadway run, it was made into a movie version. The film has a PG-13 rating by the MPAA for mature themes and some drug use and sexual content. The film includes some light-hearted sexual jokes, mock thrusting and a few sung and spoken f-words. It also depicts a few scenes of drug abuse, including a man smoking marijuana and a woman injecting herself with heroin.
